Abstract

Developing sustainable products has become a world demand. However, most of techniques used by companies to measure sustainability are mainly concerned about economic and environmental aspects, without considering sustainabilitys social issues. This paper presents a matrix that considers this triple bottom line, generating a sustainability index for raw materials (Index S), which can be used directly or to calculate the sustainability index of chemical formulations (Index Sf). After the method is described, a case study is presented on developing detergents. Index S is used for selecting raw materials, and Index Sf is used for redesigning existing products and developing a new product concept, called conceptual formulation herein. The matrix proved useful as a tool for supporting decisions and disseminating knowledge. Application of the indexes has shown to be adequate for the detergent case, allowing comparison of the degree of sustainability for raw materials and conceptual formulations. Key-words: Matrix; Index; Sustainability; Raw material; Product.
